"E pluribus unum" is a Latin phrase meaning "out of many, one," and it's a motto of the United States, appearing on the Great Seal and coins.
Later, "In God We Trust" would become our country's motto.
"E pluribus unum" signifies the unification of the thirteen original colonies into a single nation.
In the minds of our Founding Fathers, most who came to the New World came for the same reasons: liberty, specifically religious freedom and liberty, freedom of speech, no taxation without representation, etc., and a small, efficient government.
The people came en masse, and while most retained a part of the culture of their mother country, their goal was to assimilate into the United States.
By the second generation, most had assimilated and become "Americans."
"E pluribus unum."
Things have changed.
